Alchemy is for creating potions, synthesizing compounds, identifying magical/chemical properties, and making gunpowder.
I. Tools of the Trade
Crafting is where ingredients are turned into potent elixirs, stabilized poisons, or functional compounds. The difficulty of a recipe is set by its Level Tier, not simply by the ingredients’ rarity.
Recipe Requirements: * Every major potion or compound requires specific base materials and tools. These recipes will be tiered (Lvl 1 to Lvl 10) because the required process, precision, and understanding of volatile compounds increase with skill. * When attempting a recipe, you are rolling against the Level Tier difficulty DC of that recipe, modified by your Alchemy score.
Tool Dependencies: Crafting requires specialized tools and facilities to function efficiently:
Basic Field Kit
Level Required: 1
Weight: 5 lbs
Function: Basic healing potions, antitoxins.
Notes: Portable and sufficient for most emergencies on the road.
Alchemist’s Bench
Level Required: 4
Weight: 30 lbs
Function: Element-infused oils, stabilized poisons, complex brews.
Notes: Requires a semi-permanent location such as an inn or a workshop.
Grand Conservatory
Level Required: 8
Weight: Stationairy
Function: Permanent attribute elixirs, homunculi, legendary compounds.
Notes: Requires dedicated magic/fortified facility such as a laboratory or tower.
Note: Players must possess the required tool and be in a suitable location to attempt recipes at that tier.
II. The Flow of Alchemical Study
- Learning: You do not learn all chemistry at once. Every level unlocks a new set of recipes and theoretical knowledge.
- Volatile Experimentation (Failure): When you fail an advanced recipe, the consequences are often more dramatic than just wasting time. Failure could result in:
- A minor explosion that damages your surroundings or equipment.
- Temporary sickness or chemical burns.
- The creation of a dangerous side-effect (e.g., mixing two acids creates a volatile gas).
- Research & Discovery: The highest level of the skill is not just making potions, but understanding why they work. Advanced investigation might allow an alchemist to create entirely new compounds or even discover forgotten chemical processes, leading to major plot developments.
